Discover features of the Actium Compost Drums

Actium Compost Drums are simple, durable, and reliable composters. They are easy to operate and maintain. Their insulated, rotating drums aerate and mix the material, resulting in very rapid Hot Composting.

We began manufacturing rotating composters in 2010. Initially, our customers were poultry and other livestock farmers. They have an organic waste that is difficult and costly to dispose of. And they preferred an environmentally sound way to do it. The disposal of food waste is now the same. Food scraps can also be composted on-site in one our rotating, insulated drums. The number of food waste producers choosing to compost at their location is increasing every year.

Actium Composter Construction Overview

The Compost Drum is a commercial on-site composting system.  It is available as either a batch or a flow through design. They both have well insulated drums. Durable jackets protect the insulation from moisture and damage. They are both rotating composters with paddles inside them. The paddles mixa nd aerate the contents inside the drums. You can add organic residue to them at whatever frequency is convenient. This could be from several times per day to perhaps once per week. They both require a bulking amendment to be added with the organic residue to be composted. This bulking amendment must be dry and absorbent. It also must be high in carbon.

Batch Composter

All the material is mixed together in the 2 cubic yard insulated Batch Composter. This allows for more contact between the composting micro organisms and fresh material put in the drum. The result is a higher rate of composting. Paddles inside the drum mixes and aerates the contents, and moves it to the outside of the drum. More space is created by the hatch to put in fresh material. The hatch has a large 2 ft. diameter. This is large enough for a large garbage can to be used to put in the organic residue or the required dry absorbent carbon bulking agent necessary for successful composting. Addition of the bulking agent several times per week is sufficient. It does not need to be added with every addition of organic residue.

When the drum is full, the contents can be easily removed through the large hatch. A large garden cart, wheelbarrow or bucket on a tractor can be used. It can then be placed in a secondary resting area where it will finish composting. This is necessary to stop the biological activity in the compost, making it safe to use as a soil amendment. This process will take about 2 weeks.

Continuous Flow Composter.

Our Continuous Flow composters have a stainless steel hopper that the material to be composted and bulking amendment is placed. The bulking amendment should be added whenever fresh material is put in to be composted. As the drum rotates, the material is drawn in. At the same time, composted material comes out the discharge end. These composters are essentially insulated augers. The paddles are designed to move the material as well as mix and aerate the contents. When the compost is discharged from the drum, it should also be placed in a secondary area to cure before it is safe to use. Again, this will take about 2 weeks.

An effective insulation system is necessary for rapid microbial decomposition or “Hot Composting” such as what occurs in The Compost Drum.  We use a recognized tank insulation system.  This consists of

High density glass fiber insulation

and a durable

Stainless Steel or Aluminum jacket

Together, they ensure that sufficient heat is retained for The Compost Drum to achieve the temperature required for pathogen elimination and rapid organic matter oxidation.
